MIT Demos, Startups, and Spinouts

At Climate Week NYC 2025, the following demos, startups, and spinouts will be on display at the MIT Innovation Showcase.

MIT Demos

Bringing Computation to the Climate Challenge (BC3)

From the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Center for Sustainability Science and Strategy, BC3 develops advanced climate emulators that combine physics-based and data-driven methods to produce fast, accurate, and interpretable climate projections, enabling real-time interactive maps and enhanced analysis of climate patterns and their attribution.

Community Carbon Impact Calculator

From the Media Lab, the Community Carbon Impact interactive installation uses dynamic, bubble-based visualizations and real-time data to help visitors understand the effects of local, community-level interventions — such as switching to electric vehicles or adopting plant-based diets — on reducing carbon emissions, inspiring action through a participatory experience.

Electron-Conducting Carbon-Cement- Based (EC^3) Materials Hub

The EC^3 hub conducts interdisciplinary research to develop scalable, low-carbon, and multifunctional solutions for cement and concrete, aiming to transform these essential materials for a more sustainable built environment.

En-ROADS

Climate Interactive, MIT Sloan, and Ventana Systems developed a climate solutions simulator to provide interactive, evidence-based tools for leaders to test and refine climate policies, enabling informed decision-making on global environmental challenges.

Earth Resources Laboratory (ERL) and the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC)

ERL focuses on biological and abiotic carbon sequestration, critical minerals, geothermal energy, and geological hydrogen, while collaborating with PSFC on pioneering fusion energy research and developing microwave drilling technology to access supercritical geothermal resources for large-scale energy production.

J-PAL | King Climate Action Initiative (K-CAI)

The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT uses rigorous research to identify effective solutions to poverty and inform policy worldwide. At Climate Week NYC, J-PAL will showcase innovations from its King Climate Action Initiative (K-CAI), including emissions trading schemes to reduce air pollution, payments for ecosystem services, green manufacturing, and state and local innovations — demonstrating how evidence can drive scalable, equitable policies reaching millions of people.

Sodium – Air Fuel Cells Break the 1 kWh/kg Barrier While Removing Atmospheric CO2/PropelAero

Propel Aero, in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), is developing a high-energy density sodium-air fuel cell that could revolutionize long-distance aviation and shipping by offering a more efficient and sustainable alternative to traditional jet fuel and bunker oil.

Sustainable Extraction of Critical Minerals from Earth-Abundant Feedstocks/RockZero

Rock Zero, from the Yet-Ming Chiang Lab in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), is focused on developing low-temperature, sustainable extraction methods for critical minerals like lithium and graphite, aiming to reduce emissions and energy use, while diversifying the domestic supply chain and safeguarding national interests by increasing processing capacity.

Universal Generative AI for the Discovery of New Liquid and Polymer Electrolytes

From the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the group uses a universal generative AI platform, combined with a vast experimental database and advanced machine learning, to help battery and EV manufacturers rapidly discover, optimize, and validate liquid and polymer electrolytes, significantly reducing development time and enhancing decision-making.

Startups and Spinouts

Active Surfaces

Active Surfaces is commercializing an ultra-thin-film solar technology that can unlock terawatts of dual land-use, next-generation deployment.

Addis Energy

Addis Energy is pioneering a geologic ammonia production process by injecting water, nitrogen, and catalysts into iron‑rich subsurface rock, enabling the Earth itself to function as a chemical reactor that produces clean ammonia with net energy gain and no carbon emissions.

AtmosZero

AtmosZero is an electrified, air‑source heat pump boiler that delivers high‑temperature steam for industrial and district heating with no on‑site combustion.

Carbion

Carbion innovates a thermochemical platform that transforms biomass into high-quality graphite for batteries and other critical industries, faster and more affordably than traditional methods.

Helix Carbon

Helix Carbon is creating a drop-in, modular, self-contained carbon-capture & conversion system that provides supply chain resiliency, full circularity, and generates competitively-priced, carbon-neutral chemicals and syngas.

MacroCycle

MacroCycle aims to protect our world through circular, sustainable, zero-carbon upcycling process.

Mantel

Mantel develops molten borate salts as high‑temperature carbon capture materials that operate inside boilers, kilns, and furnaces — recovering heat and slashing energy costs of point‑source capture.

Pascal

Pascal (a Harvard spinout) is reimagining refrigeration and heat‑pump technology via a novel class of solid “barocaloric” refrigerants that operate at low pressure and ambient temperatures comparable to traditional HVAC systems, but with zero global‑warming potential.

PixelFrame

Pixelframe is a modular precast concrete system designed for reuse and upfront material savings, enabling builders and developers to construct long-span, multi-story buildings within a circular economy using fully dry-jointed, steel-free concrete modules that are 100% reusable.

Sandbox Carbon

Sandbox Carbon's technology produces high-quality carbon offsets by capturing carbon emissions on-premises at commercial and industrial facilities, enabling businesses to protect against climate change and achieve no release of carbon to the environment.
